Rhode Island Cranston High School West student Jessica Ahlquist successfully sued her school to have a Christian prayer mural removed from the state-funded public establishment. Her argument, a textbook case of separation of church and state, was sufficient to win U.S. District Court Judge Ronald R. Lagueux over, who praised her for her courage in his decision:

“The Court refrains from second-guessing the expressed motives of the Committee members, but nonetheless must point out that tradition is a murky and dangerous bog. While all agree that some traditions should be honored, others must be put to rest as our national values and notions of tolerance and diversity evolve. At any rate, no amount of history and tradition can cure a constitutional infraction. The Court concludes that Cranston’s purposes in installing and, more recently, voting to retain the Prayer Mural are not clearly secular.”

Jessica Ahlquist may have won her legal battle to remove an unconstitutional prayer banner from her public school, but that doesn’t mean she can finally resume her everyday life. No, now she’s receiving horrible comments from fellow classmates, community members, and other angry Christians who are very, very offended that their religion no longer has the special status to be forced upon others:

Those comments are all verbatim, taken from Facebook, Twitter and comments threads. For the record, police are taking them very seriously. At least one student has been disciplined, and all of the students making threats are under investigation.

This honestly gives me a sick feeling in my stomach.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, threatening someone with rape is NEVER OK. I’m pretty sure that if god was real he’d be pretty fucking pissed off at those assholes.

Poor kid, those people are disgusting. It saddens me to see such a brave young girl be attacked by immature bigoted jerks, but what saddens me even more is that this kind of reaction after she won her case was not surprising at all, and if those people laid a hand on her they’re likely to get away with it anyway…

And these people claim to be Christians… That’s fucking sad. Poor girl.

It sickens me how people who consider themselves Christian’s can say stuff like this. I hold Christian beliefs(with lots of Buddhist influences) but I distance myself from a lot of churches and others of my faith because of people that think like this.

This is why people who call themselves christian hold no candle to my flame. I cannot believe the amount of hatred that is spewing from these people’s mouths, who are supposedly “good neighbors” and live by the golden rule.

Is this how you would like to be treated? Is this how you would like others to treat you? If you believe so wholeheartedly in your god and his son, then how on earth is this ok for you to do? It’s not. It’s hatred, it’s bigotry, and you are just upset that someone has called you out on your agenda pushing bullshit. Be happy as a christian, YOURSELF. Do not make others feel the same way you do, because you cannot make anyone else feel anything. You only have control over yourself, no one else, and it would be wise to remember this as you spout off “well, she did this me!” No, she didn’t. You are the one’s saying these hateful and hurtful, and frankly disgusting things.

She took down a piece of religious memorabilia because there is a separation of church and state in this country, which you clearly violated. You are reacting by showing how evil you really are.

I don’t know about you, but you don’t look very saintly to me. Get back to the basics and the fundamentals, and stop being so upset about nothing.
